Before I talk a lot about Windows 8 and the release dates, I would like to make few comments.

When will Microsoft release Windows 8 release?

Well, the answer is, no one knows it at this time. I doubt even Microsoft internal people knows anything about the release dates yet. The development team of Windows 8 project will be probably busy finalizing their feature list and coding day and night to have a competitive product ready for the show.

Typically, the product development team will not have any idea about the release dates until the business units responsible for release will come up with some dates based on various internal and external factors. However, there is a catch. The release team itself cannot come up any exact Windows 8release dates until the development team says they are ready for the release.

If you look at the history, even though there is no consistency, Microsoft typically want to come up with a new release for Windows every 3~4 years. Considering the fact that Linux is getting a lot of popularity really quick, Microsoft does not want to wait a long to release the next version, potentially called "Windows 8".

When will the release date for Windows 8 be finalized?

Before Microsoft can finalize the exact dates for Windows 8 official release and Windows 8 beta release, they have to have several rounds of discussions between their development team, marketing team and other business units involved. Based on the estimates from the development team about the completion of the development, they will come up with some Windows 8 release date.

There is no official word about it yet. As soon as I have any information about the official Windows 8 release dates, I will update them here. I don't expect Microsoft will say anything about it until mid of 2011. Even when they disclose anything about it, typically it will be like a range of period and not a fixed release date. Atleast that is what their release history shows!

Windows 8 beta release date

We are all waiting for that - a Windows 8 beta - to put our hands on it and see how well they did the job. The early betas are usually problematic, but no one should expect anything more from a beta version of OS. If you want to feel the Windows 8, have a spare computer ready to format several times.

I love testing beta products and give feedback. But in order to have a spare computer ready and keep it aside for beta testing, I need to know the Windows 8 beta release dates. Unfortunately, there is no official information available yet. I can't simply keep a spare computer aside indefinitely. So my current plan is to wait few more months before I format and get a computer ready and know how to install Windows 8.

Why don't Microsoft announce the Windows release dates early?

I agree, they should give us some estimates and road map on when they are going to release the new Windows versions like the upcoming Windows 8. I can see a lot of activity in the internet asking about Windows 8 new features and Windows 8 release dates. Everyone comes up with their own guesses and spreads rumours. I noticed even some websites post some specific dates for the Windows 8 release, but there is no truth in it. Even we have some resources here but have mentioned that we are also just guessing the Windows 8 release date.

It will be really useful if Microsoft can publish some road maps and estimated dates for the release of Windows client operating systems.
